My diamond is chipped. What can I do?

While a diamond is the hardest substance known to man, it is not the toughest. Hardness is the ability of a substance to resist scratching. Toughness is the ability to withstand breakage.

Diamonds may break when they are hit against another hard substance with enough force. An example would be when your in a hurray and you smack your ring into the granite or marble counter top.

Chipped Diamond

Can anything be done to repair the diamond?

If your diamond is a half carat or more, recutting is worth the cost. This is done by highly trained diamond cutters. You jewellery store should be dealing with a cutter who would be happy to estimate the recut weight and cost to recut your diamond.

Often the recut or salvage weight is quite high. I have seen diamonds returned that were 95% of the original weight, but results do vary. Most often there is a small fee to give you the information you need to make an informed decision. There is no need to leave your diamond in this condition. The chip will weaken the stone and further problems will likely occur.
