Jewellery Insurance Claims - How does it work?

Jewellery  Insurance Claims

What to do first:

If there has been a crime report it to the police. Then call your insurance company and report the loss to them.
You will be contacted by an insurance claims adjuster. He or she will be your contact regarding your insurance claim and will guide you through the process of settling your claim.

There are some important issues your insurance policy and claims adjuster will help answer:

  1. What is the policy limit? This is the amount you are covered for in dollars.
  2. What is your deductible? This is the amount you pay to settle a claim before the insurance company pays anything.
  3. How will this claim affect your future coverage and premiums?
  4. What do you need to do to proceed with the claim?

Your insurance company will have you fill in a "Proof of Loss" form and submit it. They will also ask for competitive estimates to determine the cost to replace you jewellery. Normally, this involves a meeting with a jewellery store or two. You are free to get estimates from your favorite jewellery store or go to the preferred jeweller suggested by your insurance company. A jewellery appraiser will meet with you to determine the "Replacement Cost" of your jewellery.

Bring along all documents such as receipts, photos and appraisals of your jewellery. These will help the appraiser determine a more accurate opinion of the replacement cost. This is the cost to replace the item(s) with the same item if available, or one of a similar kind.

Conger's Jewellers has a lot of experience working with jewellery claims. We would be pleased to help you determine the cost to replace your jewellery, watches and giftware. We do recommend you make an appointment by calling 613-722-4547. This allows us an opportunity to set aside the correct amount of time for you.

Before you arrive:

  • Prepare a list of your jewellery items. Try to sketch the items if possible (not necessary, but it is very helpful if you can). It will help you think about your jewellery in detail.
  • For each item try to recall the purchase price and the year or purchase.
  • Try to find any receipts, photos or jewellery appraisals and bring them along.
We understand it's a difficult time for you and we are here to help. Anyone of us is able to be of service. This is something we have done for many years. All our estimates are provided free of charge.
